HISTORY OF HOUSE

Holgate’s House is a significant piece of local history as well as a monument to the Tudor reign that changed Britain’s and Europe’s social fabric forever. A priory has been on the site for centuries with monastic education known to go back to the 14th century. In the early 1500s Henry VIII separated from Rome and began an era of phenomenal religious change. Holgate’s House was built after the dissolution of St Mary’s Priory, effected by Thomas Cromwell, whose life was recently documented in a series of award winning books by Hillary Mantel. In 1547 Robert Holgate, the archbishop of York founded Malton School and for the first 365 years Holgate’s House was the school building before the school moved in 1904.
